School Based Health Care

Minneapolis School Based Clinics take a holistic approach to adolescent care, providing physical, mental health counseling, reproductive care and health education as an integrated part of primary care.

We meet teens where they are - in school, during school! - and engage teens in their care, offer support and opportunities for decision making, emphasize strengths, and build constructive connections with school to promote their optimal health.

School-based health care is a proven model that increases health care access for adolescents, who are an underserved population in traditional health care settings. The use of school-based clinics is associated academic and social benefits, including higher grade point averages, lower truancy and suspension and improved experiences of care, more positive associations with school life and feelings of connectedness. When students are healthy, cared for, listened to, valued and connected, they do better.

This model benefits students, schools, parents/guardians, and communities! When health care is accessed in schools...

• students benefit because they don’t have to travel to find a provider,
• caretakers benefit because they don’t have to leave their daily responsibilities, and
• schools benefit because students spend more time in the classroom. 

We are members of the national School-Based Health Alliance and the Minnesota School-Based Health Alliance.

Our services are available to all Minneapolis Public High School Students. 

No Cost

You will never be charged for services.  If you have insurance, we will work with them to cover costs. If you don't have insurance or don't know your insurance, we use other funding sources to cover our operating and service costs. Either way, you will not see a bill.

Privacy matters! We follow all Health Privacy (HIPAA) requirements. And, we know that sometimes being in school adds another level of concern. Your business stays in the clinic. Learn more about minor consent below.

Over the last 40 years, the Minneapolis Health Department has partnered with Minneapolis Public Schools to offer services to students. In the past four decades, we have expanded and adapted our services to better meet students needs.

Today, clinics operate within seven Minneapolis public high schools and provide teen-friendly, inclusive and barrier-free health services.

Around 8,500 students attend these schools and have access to clinic services.
